Introduction

 

Chandrashekhar M. Biradar is currently working at the Centre for Spatial Analysis, College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences, University of Oklahoma, Norman, OK. His current research interests include global land remote sensing; vegetation phenology, irrigated and rainfed area mapping, global food and environmental security, land use and land cover change, cropping intensity, climate change and ecology of infectious diseases. Over the last 9 years, he has played a key role, as one of the lead researchers, in producing the first satellite sensor based global irrigated and rainfed area maps. In addition, extensive use of spatial modelling, decision tree algorithms, and Google Earth data for accuracy evaluations were investigated. He has played a key role in conceptualization and development of geospatial data gateways. He has been actively involved in rapid response mapping and monitoring for relief efforts and building satellite sensor data catalogue for distastes. The other projects where he has made significant contributions include mapping water productivity, the global wetland inventory, biodiversity, and knowledge base system.  Dr. Biradar played key role in nationwide project “Biodiversity characterization at landscape level using remote sensing and GIS” where he was involved in extensive ecological/agro-ecosystems ground surveys, mapping and geospatial modelling. He serves as a review committee member on no. of the national and international remote sensing based methods and models. Along with his research carrier, he has made significant contribution in academic curriculum development and teaching. He has been taught courses on RS/GIS technology and applications and published many research paters which include 25+ peer reviewed, 18+ Books/Chapters, over 70 other publications. Dr. Biradar has been recognised with number of international awards and recognitions such as the Young Scientist of the Year, Best Team Initiative, Outstanding Team, Board member, steering committee member, etc.  Dr. Biradar is involved in number of projects funded by NASA, NIH, NSF, FAO. Currently, he is working on projects that study land use and land cover change, climate change, global croplands, hydrological/biochemical cycles and infectious disease ecology and global food security.

The International Water management Institute (IWMI) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAAS) workshop on GIAM. Chandra was the scientific lead conducting the workshop. About 50 participants from CAAS, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and academic and governmental institutes attended the 1-day workshop.

New Delhi, India, April 13, 2007. Global irrigated area mapping (GIAM) workshop for India (GIAM India) held in New Delhi, 2007.
